Since its inception in 1984, Trintec has stayed true to its mission of creating aviation-inspired clocks and watches, including such creations as their original 1990 Altimeter instrument watch, the outrageous Zulu-7 Pro I reviewed back in 2015. They also have the more conventional yet still uncompromising Co-pilot line, the latest of which is the Trintec Co-pilot Airfield, available on Kickstarter now.
Trintec designed Airfield in response to customers’ requests for a simple, no-date pilot’s watch with the Co-pilot’s more conventional round case design. Trintec fans needn’t worry that the brand has gone soft. At 42mm wide (43mm across the bezel), 54mm long, and 15mm thick, it is still a big one, although its round barrel will wear smaller than the square and cushion-cased models in their catalog.
Like all of the brand’s watches, the Co-Pilot Airfield is built for hard use. It runs a sturdy and reliable Seiko NH35 automatic secured in an alloy movement holder. The stainless steel case has an AR-coated sapphire and a screw-down crown. In the unlikely event that you need to pull a Capitan Scully, the Airfield will be ready with its 200m water resistance rating.
For the dial, Trintec has not strayed far from its original design brief. The Airfield displays a high-contrast white-on-black colorway, oversized cardinal numbers, and fat sword hands for instant legibility. A smooth, fixed bezel keeps the focus on the three-hand face. Japanese LuminNova lights it up at night. It’s a clean and purposeful watch. Trintec offers the case in a sand-blasted matte finish that looks particularly serious in a black PVD coating.
Strap options are limited to 22mm Zulus in heavy black or olive nylon with black hardware. If you want to swap it for a two-piece strap, sturdy screw bars will make sure it stays locked to the lugs.
The Trintec Co-Pilot Airfield promises to be a solid, no-frills tool watch that will shrug off just about anything the typical enthusiast or bush pilot might throw at it. Pre-order pricing starts at $325 CA, or about $240 US. The campaign runs through Friday, December 1, 2023 at 11:00 AM, after which the full retail price will be $450 US. Rewards are already selling out. If you want to grab one for yourself or the tool watch fan in your life, visit the Trintec Airfield Kickstarter Page.
