I’ve often said I own more than enough NATOs, and yet, I keep getting more. What can I say? They are like snacks: tasty, inexpensive, and fun. The Vario strap is now funding on IndieGoGo certainly fits this description. A product from graphic designer, Ivan Chua, Vario straps are available in sizes 18-22 and a fabulous array of bold patterns and intense colors.
The straps come in sizes 18-22mm For this review, Ivan sent me a 20mm Ocean Cheveron, a multi-tonal blue herringbone with dashes of orange. Of course, it would be safest to pair it with a white dial watch, but it was much more satisfying to pop it onto a Seiko Orange Monster. It’s not subtle, but it looks fantastic, and because it is a nylon weave, it makes perfect sense on this diver. The straps beg for creative pairings. I think they would look outrageous on offbeat 1970’s vintage watches.
The loops and buckles are sewn-in and the stitching is straight and tidy. At the end of the campaign, backers will choose their patterns as well as a polished, brushed, gold, or rose gold hardware, all with an engraved keeper. The hardware on my sample was polished stainless steel. The strap measures 270mm long, which is just fine on my 6.5″ wrist, leaving just a tiny bit of tail to tuck.
We could all use some nylon NATOs as we move into summer, and these colorful prints are ideal for the coming hot weather. As of today, Vario is not yet funded but is tantalisingly close to its goal. I’d recommend you head over to IndieGoGo and check them out. A single strap with changing tool is just $22, but the best deal is two straps, a tool, and a single-pouch watch case; or, $76 for four with the tool and a five pouch watch roll.
